“Not a Sweep” sweep

Posted: May 27, 2015 in Uncategorized

IS THIS A SWEEP OR A SHOW OF POWER? They had Riot gear on. They had Animal Service with them and were taking people’s pets. You can see in the Photo what it must have looked like to the Houseless Community. Guess what? The city gave the Police Department a new site (Land) over by the Hawthorne Bridge and Fire Station for a Police Horse Corral. It’s a very sad thing when People are treated like a DISEASE!

There was good times for everyone involved. There was enough food to go around between Sisters of the Road, Food Not Bombs, and Ha Ha Now to treat everyone with happy tummies. Our entertainment went off without a hitch also due to great scheduling.Ibrahim Mubarak started the shindig as the MC introducing the FU man, Paul Boden from WRAP gave us a heart warming speech, one only a subversive anarchist guerrilla would love, and there were plenty of us out there!Bajo Salario was then introduced with Latino style of music and a message of solidarity for the issues we face today. Speeches were the next in line with people like Leo Rhodes, Lucilene Lira, and again Ibrahim. Many thanks to Shoehorn for bringing his very coordinated styling of sax and tap dance to this event, now that’s entertainment! Mic Crenshaw funked it up with many of his original music favorites that had everybody up singin’ and groovin’.Topping the evening off with the eclectic vids from the B Media Collective. Fun that makes you think. One of their selection was a unreleased work in progress about R2S/R2DToo. Can’t wait for the premiere!Security had very fewer problems with coordination this year, and not a lot of police interaction ( you think their getting used to us?) It went pretty smoothly in all.

The police visited the camp this morning and threatened to enforce an ordinance that prevents blocking a right of way – which they say is the “road” that the camp is currently using. Anyone who has been to the camp can clearly see that there is no road there. There are blackberry brambles and dirt paths. They say the neighbors are complaining. The “neighbors” are the Portland Water Bureau, and Portland Public Schools. They are situated in an industrial district, not a residential district. So, how can the city & police commissioner Sam Adams displace these people (most of whom are on waiting lists to get into housing, many of whom are struggling from health issues that make employment all the more elusive). Where will they go? What will they do?
If you have a piece of land that you are willing to lend them, or a church that could open up it’s parking lot or basement, while they regroup, and figure out where to go from here, in a city where being homeless makes you an illegal – where every act of survival – sleeping, cooking, shitting, building shelter – will endanger the few things you have, and your freedom. Where do we go? is the question I’ve heard at sweep after sweep… Do you have an answer for them.
If so – contact Right 2 Survive –
